Originally built in 1928, the Adelaide Railway Station, located in the heart of the Riverbank Precinct, underwent significant restoration and upgrades in 2022 to ensure its remarkable heritage is preserved for generations to come. HI Lighting proudly contributed to the station’s transformation, supplying the majority of the lighting upgrades, including the striking façade illumination.

The lighting design concept, created by FPOV, was brought to life through a collaborative and meticulous trial process. The heritage status of the station presented a complex brief, requiring seamless coordination between FPOV and all involved suppliers to address challenges as they arose.

The station’s exterior walls are illuminated using Philips UNI products, which deliver a dynamic yet refined effect. These fixtures were selected for their low voltage capabilities, compact design, and the reliability and quality synonymous with Philips/Signify. A key feature of the Philips UNI products is their simplified wiring system, enabling both linear and spot fixtures to share the same cabling. Their minimalist design and high output ensured the architectural integrity of the surrounding structures was preserved.

Through the collaboration of FPOV, Signify, HI Lighting SA, and SKS Technologies, a sophisticated lighting solution was achieved. This design provides a soft and elegant aesthetic for nightly use while incorporating vibrant colour and light displays for special events, perfectly blending the station into the city’s dynamic atmosphere.

Inside the concourse, Australian made Digilin Javelin  extrusion was installed in several areas, addressing the client’s need for a durable and reliable solution in difficult to access locations. Two types of Ligman spotlights (Odessa and Lador) were also utilised to meet Australian lighting standards and to highlight the intricate ceiling details with stunning and impactful results. These spotlights offer exceptional durability, precise optical control, customisable wattage options, and the assurance of a 10-year warranty.

This project has delivered a remarkable transformation for one of Adelaide’s most iconic landmarks. The lighting design enhances the station’s heritage and architectural features, ensuring its legacy is preserved for years to come.
