Marnkutyi Parirna Theatre

In 2023, Trinity College opened its doors to a brand-new performing arts theatre, The Marnkutyi Parirna Theatre, an exciting addition for both the school and the local community. This state-of-the-art facility features an impressive auditorium with ranked seating for 520 people, a large performance stage, foyer, front-of-house area, gallery, recording rooms, green room, control room, offices, and rehearsal spaces.

When the project team was initially approached about the theatre development, the client brief called for a commercial level venue capable of hosting both school and public events. Given the specialised nature of theatre projects, the lighting design was a critical aspect of the design.

One challenge the team encountered was creating a dramatic effect on the theatre’s feature timber walls. Extensive modelling and testing of light positions were required to achieve the desired impact. To enhance the performance experience, and provide flexibility for various productions, careful consideration was given to the selection of fittings for the multipurpose performance stage lighting ensuring a high performing and adaptable lighting and controls solution.

To reduce energy consumption, an automatic lighting control system (CBUS) and preset scenes was incorporated into the design. Emphasis was placed on selecting high quality, durable fittings to minimise long term maintenance requirements.

For the exterior, a combination of architectural and functional lighting was used to highlight the building’s aesthetics while ensuring safety and visibility. A stainless-steel sculptural façade element, enhanced by a dynamic lighting solution, was incorporated to pay tribute to the area’s First Nations history, reflected the significance of the name Marnkutyi Parirna, meaning “Three Rivers” in the local Kaurna language. This name acknowledges the site’s connection to the local landscape, particularly the North Para River, South Para River, and Gawler River, with the connecting point known as the Three Rivers site, symbolising unity and connection.

A major highlight for the teams involved was the ongoing collaboration between all project stakeholders, resulting in a design that accentuates the theatre’s key architectural elements. The client provided positive and engaging feedback, praising the quality and impact of the overall lighting design.
