Illuminating an Iconic Tennis Precinct for a New Era

Tennis SA’s visionary redevelopment of Memorial Drive has transformed the iconic venue into a world‑class, all‑weather tennis precinct, securing its position on the global tennis stage. The Memorial Drive Centre Court Redevelopment (MDCCR) seamlessly integrates modern design with the site’s historic character, creating a premier destination for elite tournaments and community tennis alike.

Lighting Solution & Delivery

HI Lighting proudly served as the specialist sports lighting partner across all stages of this major multi‑year redevelopment, supporting the project from its commencement in 2018 (Stage 1) through to its completion in 2023 (Stage 3).

During Stage 1, HI Lighting supplied the lighting for 11 hard courts, four synthetic grass courts and five clay courts. This was followed by Stage 2, where HI Lighting delivered the sports lighting solution for the new show court and its striking roof structure. This phase took place under significant time pressure, as Tennis SA already committed to hosting an international tournament before construction had even begun. Despite this challenge, Stage 2 was successfully delivered within just 10 months. The collaboration extended into Stage 3 (2022), with HI Lighting providing the lighting for the newly developed Sunken Court.

Throughout all three stages, HI Lighting worked closely with Lucid Australia, Cox Architecture and Tennis Australia, delivering specialist lighting design, consulting and technical expertise to ensure every element of the redevelopment met international performance requirements. Services included on-site illumination surveys, lighting aiming support and ongoing technical assistance. The result is a lighting system that strengthens Memorial Drive’s legacy while enabling the venue to confidently meet the demands of international competitions for years ahead.

Advanced Lighting Control System

A C‑Bus DALI lighting control system was installed to provide comprehensive dimming control functionality across the precinct. This highly adaptable system allows the Main Show Court to be illuminated to international broadcast standards, while also providing efficient, flexible lighting configurations for all three covered courts outside of Adelaide International events. Lighting levels can be tailored to the specific standard of play, ranging from local competitions through to top‑tier international matches.

The redevelopment of Memorial Drive has reimagined this iconic venue, blending its celebrated past with the modern infrastructure required for world‑class tennis. The upgraded courts and enhanced facilities ensure that precinct remains a central hub of tennis in South Australia, ready to host major events and international competitions well into the future.
