Norwood Ambulance Station

Designing the Future of Emergency Response

As part of a $311.2 million investment by the Government of South Australia to deliver improved staffing and infrastructure for SA Ambulance Services (SAAS), the Norwood Ambulance Station was completed in 2024 as a purpose built hub designed to strengthen emergency response capabilities across Adelaide’s eastern suburbs. This modern facility includes staff amenities, training spaces and a large garage for seven emergency vehicles, all underpinned by an environmentally conscious design that prioritises sustainability and operational efficiency.

Sustainable Design

Lighting was a critical element in achieving the station’s goals of functionality, durability and energy efficiency. The design needed to support 24/7 operations, enhance staff wellbeing and complement the architectural vision. Throughout the building, modern and durable fixtures were chosen to withstand continuous use while reducing energy consumption. Locally manufactured South Australian linear fittings line the hallways, creating visual interest with ceiling focused detailing that adds depth and character to the space. In the staff kitchen, three imported Italian pendant lights introduce a touch of elegance and warmth, balancing aesthetics with practicality. Training and office areas feature carefully planned downlights and task lighting to ensure optimal illumination for productivity and comfort. In the garage, powerful High-Bay fittings provide consistent, bright lighting that guarantees safety and efficiency for vehicle servicing and storage at all hours.

Project Outcome

The lighting design reflects SAAS’s commitment to sustainability by prioritising energy efficient solutions and local sourcing wherever possible. Combined with the station’s modern amenities, these choices contribute to a workplace that supports staff well-being and operational excellence. The Norwood Ambulance Station stands as a benchmark for healthcare infrastructure, where thoughtful lighting design enhances functionality, aesthetics and sustainability.
